It would be nice if all books were this beautiful.

Dresden

After RailsConf I wanted a change of scenery from Berlin so I hopped on a train to Dresden. (I have the Lonely Planet Berlin city guide and Dresden was one of the three other cities they had information for, so that helped narrow the search.)
Dresden was beautiful.

The Life Obsessive With ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ Director Wes Anderson
An longish but interesting article about Wes Anderson. After the Life Aquatic, which was actually OK the second time I saw it after a somewhat disappoint initial viewing, if the new movie isn’t more than an excersize in form it’ll be hard to come out […]

Piss like a pirate, garrrrr!

Joe Grand, making an Arrr-Duino

Ever wondered why pirates wear eye-patches?
Human vision, which in many ways our most dominant sense, is really pretty amazing. Your eyes and visual system are continually adjusting and integrating so many different things to give us a coherent idea of the world that we’re in. Occasionally we’ll notice a […]

Getting Started with Hobo

Get the latest gem:

combray:~/Development/rails wschenk$ sudo gem install hobo
Successfully installed hobo-0.6.2

Create your project. This takes a while, and checks out Rails Edge. I named mine linkster, just because. You should choose something else probably.

combray:~/Development/rails wschenk$ hobo linkster; cd linkster

Create your databases:

combray:~/Development/rails/linkster wschenk$ rake db:create:all

Generate the migrations file. Hobo looks inside of […]

The Fall and Rise of American Inequality

The times finally got rid of their wall so now things are opening up. Their reach is expanding, anyway, at least into my browser. Paul Krugman is probably the op-ed columnist that I am synced up the most with. Below is a chart from his post Introducing his blog.

The chart shows the […]

Buy 2 Get 1! One Laptop, One Child, Two Laptop, You

Here’s a cool idea. Build a cheap laptop, around $100, that designed for children all around the world. Especially the developing world, where there isn’t access to the latest technologies or even regular electricity. Have it use enough power that human energy can charge it up. Have it automatically create a […]

Wednesday Notes

Alright it’s already days after the conference has closed and people have been twittering and blogging about their extended travels. I’ve got another post about going to Dresden I’ve been meaning to post… so I thought I’d would cover three more things from the last day which I found very interesting.
There were more interesting […]

That’s a very clever use of how the rind is lighter and whiter than the inner flesh.
