If you didn’t know anything about video calling, Apple would definitely have you convinced that they just up and invented the concept based on never-aired Jetsons footage judged too futuristic for TV. Of course, the truth is that in lots of other places (and even in the US to an extent), smartphone video calling isn’t exactly a new thing. In fact, in much of Europe and Asia, this technology is old hat. But Apple isn’t going to let a little thing like facts get in the way of a good marketing play, and in their (slight) defense, no one’s effectively brought video calling to the masses just yet. (One of our European editors says that he’s gone ten years without seeing anyone make a video call in his neck of the woods.)
